DocsanTM 2.0 Help

Introduction

DocsanTM is a Java based document delivery system that integrates a powerful search engine with Full-Text and Parametric searching. Searches can also be ranked by relevance.

DocsanTM integrates Web and CD technologies and has the capability to allow live updates over an Intranet or the Internet. (Note: this feature has been disabled for the Hitachi H8/H8S CD-ROM.)

Browsing

The contents of the CD-ROM or web site appear in a hierarchical table of contents in the left frame of the browser. To view a document click on its title in the left frame.

The next to an icon signifies that there is an expandable list associated with the item. Click on the to display the items in the list.

Full-Text searching

To perform a search, click on the Search button below the DocsanTM logo in the left frame of the browser. This will display the main DocsanTM dialog. Full-Text searches can be peformed by clicking on the Search Tab.

To find a single word simply type the word into the Find field and press <enter>, or click on the Search button. You may also select which library to search from the selection list on the left. You may choose one or more libraries to search for a given set of keywords.

When the search is completed a list of documents, along with a "relevance score" between 1 to 1000 are displayed in the results list. To view any document in this list, double-click on it.

Advanced Full-Text searching

DocsanTM supports the use of AND, OR and NOT operators to build boolean expressions and help limit the results of a search. A document must have the specified combination of words to be returned by the search. Wildcards using the "*" operator are also supported.

AND: The AND operator allows you to specify documents that must contain two or more search terms to be returned by the search.
OR: The OR operator allows you to specify documents that may contain either of two or more search terms to be returned by the search.
NOT: The NOT operator allows to specify documents that must not contain a search term to be returned by the search.
* The "*" operator acts as a wildcard, finding all words that start with the specified characters. For example, typing:
memory*
would find all words starting with "memory".

Parametric searching:

Parmetric searching allows the user to retrieve documents based on the parameters specified by the author, rather than keywords that occur in the content. For example, a parametric search specifying the ROM size of 16K will only find documents associated with 16K ROM. However, a Full-Text search on 16K will return all documents that happen to contain the term 16K.

To initiate a parametric search, click on the Search button below the DocsanTM logo in the left frame of the browser. This will display the main DocsanTM dialog. Parametric searches can be peformed by clicking on the Parametric Tab.

To find documents associated with a given set of parameters, select the requisite parameters from any of the drop-down lists shown. Click on the Search button to display a list of the matching documents. Double-click on any document to view it in the browser.

Note:Parametric Search finds only those documents that match all the parameters specified in the drop-down lists. To ignore a parameter select the -- any -- item for that parameter.
